Apple's taxes on overseas profits last year: Less than 2 percent

Apple, like many other global companies, generate much of its profits overseas where tax rates are more favorable. But the profits are often stuck overseas, because they would be taxed at the higher 35 percent U.S. corporate rate if they were brought home, a process known as repatriation. Many companies, such as Cisco Systems, have argued for tax relief for the repatriation of foreign profits.

It's always about the money.

Storm Sandy: Power and petrol shortages dog recovery

Sandy-related power cuts were still affecting some 2.5 million customers in the US early on Saturday, according to the US Department of Energy's Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, quoted by Reuters.

Mayor Bloomberg criticised Lipa for making inadequate progress in restoring power, particularly in the Rockaways, a series of beachfront neighbourhoods hard hit by the storm.

There are always power problems. America's power grid is simply not good enough to handle today's needs and in the past decades nobody cared about improving it.

RIAA Failed To Disclose Expert’s Lobbying History to “Six-Strikes” Partners

As it turns out the RIAA failed to mention to its partners that the “impartial and independent” technology expert they retained previously lobbied for the music industry group. In a response to the controversy, CCI is now considering whether it should hire another expert to evaluate the anti-piracy monitoring technology.

The lobbying job earned the company more than half a million dollars ($637,000), which makes it hard to view the company as “independent and impartial” as the agreement between the copyright holders and ISPs requires.

The RIAA and MPAA have been caught lying so many times that the best approach is to never ever believe anything they say. Sadly enough, many of their lies and even more of their bribes have some success.

Netflix Caught Using “Pirated” Subtitles in Finland

Instead of displaying official Finnish subtitles, Netflix was caught using DivX Finland’s fansubs on the Canadian-American science fiction series Andromeda. It’s possible that Netflix made this same ‘error’ for other TV-shows and movies as well.

“It’s nice to see that the texts are used, but they did not ask permission,” they wrote, adding a link a clip from the Netflix video where DivX Finland’s credits are clearly visible.

Last year footage from the dubbing room of the American anime distributor Funimation revealed how the company was also using ‘pirated’ subtitles.

As always, it's only bad when others do it. Bascially, Netflix is pirating content here, as well as Funimation did before (which has a really bad reputation as they throw their pile of lawyers at anything that even remotely has to do with an anime they licensed). So let's see them getting sued with fictional distribution numbers, causing them to pay billions of fictional losses like those people who download a song or anime episode.

A Halliburton spokesman said Friday that the device was found late Thursday on a road in Reeves County used by oilfield services companies to get to and from well locations. The company first reported it missing to the state health department on Sept. 11, according to another report to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Awesome security for a company which makes money from killing humans.

Entire cities in the World of Warcraft have been reportedly destroyed with no one spared, not even the NPCs.

There are rumors that a folks over at Blizzard were already aware of a hack and were working on to resolve the issue but, before they fixed the issue they actually blocked the hackers who were behind the exploit. This got the hackers angry and they went on to kill everyone in the cities.

Just reset the server and roll in a backup. WoW is just a piece of software too and every software has bugs. It's not like anything important gets lost.

They’re supposed to be “one of the centerpieces of our counterterrorism strategy,” according to Janet Napolitano, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. In practice, not so much.

Unnamed DHS officials told the panel the fusion centers produce “predominantly useless information” and “a bunch of crap.” An internal 2010 assessment, which DHS did not share with Congress, found that a third of all fusion centers don’t have defined procedures for sharing intelligence — “one of the prime reasons for their existence.” At least four fusion centers identified by DHS “do not exist,” the Senate found.

A Suicide Gone Viral

Live coverage of a car chase on Fox News turned into a grisly spectacle Friday afternoon when the suspect got out of his car, stumbled down a hillside, pulled a gun, and shot himself in the head.

Of course it’s news that Fox News accidentally aired the video. And you can make a good case that Fox was inviting this type of debacle with its habit of airing live car-chase feeds. But Fox couldn’t have known that it was about to air a suicide.

Those chases are shown in the news because people want to see them. They want to see the fight of good vs evil in a simple, black and white world. Panem et circenses.

After reviewing data from 1,839 14- to 17-year-old high-school students in Los Angeles, researchers are confirming what may otherwise seem obvious: sexting and sex go hand in hand.

There's been a lot of talk about the impact sexting may have on the sex lives of kids today, including the suggestion that it is an alternative to actual sex and can help delay potentially risky behavior. This study clearly suggests otherwise.

Now I'm waiting for some politician to step forward and demand a sexting filter build into all devices and networks to protect the poor children.

After ordering a violin smashed earlier this year and freezing an account designed to let people donate toys to underprivileged children, the payment processor appears to be trying to put a more human face on its corporate image.

So is PayPal turning a leaf and serious about improving customer relations and communications? We shall see.

It's still the best to avoid PayPal completely and never let them touch a single cent of your money.
